Although it can be seen that his aim may have been just to talk to his disciples at first, the underlying intent was to have the crowds gather around him and listen to his words and spread his message. The first words Jesus says are clear, his intention are to bless and honour those who are not in authority. From this onset he is showing that his people are the poor and downtrodden, here it is clear he is talking to his own people; the Jews, not the Romans or Gentiles. Today Jesus words are meant for all those who wish to hear and understand but during those times his intention was clear. Or so we believe. If you are meek, poor, suffering from a death in the family, hungry and a non warrior and those who are persecuted then may you be blessed by the Lord God and may your path to the Kingdom of heaven be fruitful as long as you believe. Jesus then blesses those who follow the Lord in his name, this is clearly meant for his disciples as it will be them who will be in greater danger and not Jesus. Jesus words are meant to inspire and frighten in one. It may be argued that his words are for the weak minded; those who need some form of guidance. Those who have made up their minds to follow him have already become his disciples, now he is attempting to show those who follow the state religion blindly that they are weak willed and should look into ...
