help the police track a killer who may be making the same moves over and over again. It is often the case that a serial killer has a signature or
a method of killing. The killers "modus operandi" will often be employed many times. Sometimes, the killer will remove a body part or a piece of clothing as a souvenir.
Sometimes a killer will look for a particular type of victim. For example, during the Son of Sam murders in New York City in the 1970s, David Berkowitz chose
victims with dark hair. This prompted women to dye their hair blond or put on a blond wig. Then, he changed his pattern and killed a girl who was not
brunette. He also killed in certain areas for some time but just as suddenly changed the pattern. His last victim was killed in Brooklyn, but that was also his only
Brooklyn victim. Although profiling is helpful it is not always sufficient. Killers do sometimes change the game during the pursuit. The new American television show called Numbers demonstrates that sometimes
random killings are not really random at all and location can be predicted. Numbers is just a fictitious program, but it does demonstrate that there are patterns in the way
that murderers work. Profilers use information about serial killers in general as well. For example, animal abuse is very common among that type of murderer in the United States, so
