1029 While there are always exceptions, murders can often be characterized according
to the specific type of murder they commit. This characterization is based, in part, on the way the murderer physically takes his or her victims life. It is
also based, however, on factors such as the number of victims, the time elapsed between victims when there are multiple victims, the location or locations of the murders, and the
reasons the murderer chooses his or her victims. Serial killers and spree killers are particularly interesting this regard. The intent of this paper is to discuss both the
commonalities of these types of murders and the exceptions to the rule. Serial killers and spree killers alike are characterized by the fact
that they murder more than one victim. While criminologists are not always in agreement on the facts, history sometimes demonstrates distinct differences between serial killers and spree killers.
Serial killers are often characterized by the fact that they typically allow significant periods of time to elapse between their murderous acts. Because of that fact and the fact
