on the loose, the media jumps on the bandwagon. The BTK killer for example made headlines by torturing his victims and when finally caught, his arrogance disgusted the media and
the public. Yet, most serial murderers do receive attention and have books written about them. Sometimes a film is made as well. They are fascinating because they are unlike the
norm and so, serve to entertain the public. When researching the serial killer, it is important to research theories of crime in general as well as theories of assessment.
The implementation of effective policies is also relevant. How to stop a serial killer from killing is something rarely discussed in media. Why? The excitement of having serial killers among
the populous, and it being mysterious, is something that the media does not want to quell. Yet, in studying the phenomenon, it is true that one can find enough theory
in criminology to at least make a rational evaluation of just who these serial killers are, and whether or not efforts to stop them are worthwhile. There are certain
patterns that serial killers embrace and certain characteristics that they share. They are not all alike and some have seen fit to characterize them by type ("Serial killer," 2005). Motive
types of serial killing include the visionary, one that is mission oriented, the hedonistic serial killer and the gain motivated type. Other types are those who simply want power or
control ("Serial killer," 2005). In addition, the FBI has characterized serial killers into organized types and some are organized while others are disorganized ("Serial killer," 2005). The organized type is
