A 10 page paper addressing approaches to cases in these three areas of justice. The sentencing section discusses the value of shaming techniques as they might apply to a 5-time felon most recently convicted of his second rape offense. The probation section discusses the ethics of ways a privatized probation service might increase its revenues. The final section includes letters to a corrections officer, his supervisor, inmates and staff from a new warden put in place to end abuses that have been commonplace in the prison. The warden invokes the code of ethics of the the American Correctional Association (ACA). Bibliography lists 6 sources.

The judge is facing a confirmed felon on the one hand; a victim seeking maximum revenge on the other. The victims request that Joe Loser be
paraded through town wearing a "Rapist" sign, believing that being subjected to such a display will bring shame to Joe Loser. Sherman, Strang and Woods (2000) report that in
shaming experiments with youthful offenders in Australia, "those offenders who were assigned to conference subsequently offended at substantially lower levels - 38 fewer offences per year per 100 offenders -
than did the offenders assigned to court." These were violent crimes and are applicable to Joe Losers case in that respect, but the
key difference is that the offenders in the Australian experiment were young. In Losers case, this is his second rape conviction and fifth felony. Subjecting Loser to the
shaming activities that the victim requests may well have the effect of rewarding Loser for his behavior, rather than shaming him for it. It is obvious that he has
no remorse for his actions; otherwise he would change his behavior. It seems quite likely that Loser could view any attempt at shaming him as having reached the pinnacle
of what he chooses to do in life. Psychologists likely would say that Loser harbors immense hatred for women in that he chooses to rape them (Kostash, 1982), and
shaming in the form that the victim requests is more likely to solidify that hatred rather than shame him for his actions. The
victim is acting from a strong desire for vengeance, which she does not realize will not bring her any greater peace over the rape than she currently has. Though
