Goals are set. For many people, the idea of rehabilitation is the most important factor. They want criminals to be cured of their desire to do harm to society. Of
course, other people are cynical, and more realistic, as they know that rehabilitation does not always work. In fact, many claim that the prison system not only does not rehabilitation
criminals, but it hardly does anything for society at large. Indeed, the prison system notoriously creates ex-convicts who are worse off than when they entered, making new criminal associations and
being forced into same sex liaisons due to the restrictions the prison imposes. While not a panacea, rehabilitation is a good reason to incarcerate convicted criminals, but it is only
one point of view. There are other reasons for this type of punishment, such as simply to give a person their due. If someone commits a heinous crime, they should
at least be sentenced to a long prison term II. Rationale for Punishment In general, criminal theory has long enveloped something
called retributive justice. That is, an individual commits a crime and is sentenced to some sort of punishment. There is retribution by society. The individual is paying his dues, so
to speak. There has been much criticism waged against retributive justice. Why? It seems that for this type of justice to be viewed as good and rational, one would have
to see it as something aligned with a degree of sensibility. There must be a notion that not only is retributive justice something that makes the society feel good, but
that it actually helps in the long term. Of course, that might suggest other elements of theories such as deterrence because retribution is not rational. It is sort of like
