presented. Anne, my 93 year old grandmother, was born in 1913 in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The daughter of a banker and a teacher, Anne was the
second of five children and the only girl. When I asked Anne what she thought were the most significant changes that have happened in the United States since she
was a child, she had a lot to say. Anne told me about her childhood experiences growing up in a busy suburb, the expectations that her parents had of
her and her brothers, and the major changes in gender roles and courtship. In fact, Anne stated that she is "shocked" about the way girls dress, how they behave
and how early girls participate in behaviors that "end up getting them pregnant." My grandmother stated that her "parents would not have allowed her out of the house" dressed
the way some girls dress today. My grandmother repeatedly stated that she never even considered being disrespectful to her parents. She said that it just wasnt
an option. She remembered a time when her older brother, Chip, who was around 13 at the time, stayed out late into the evening on a Sunday, a day
when they were all expected to be at home, go to church together and then share in a Sunday dinner. Chips absence caused a lot of tension during dinner
and she recalled that both of her parents were angry. When Chip returned later that evening and apologized, having a lot of reasons to explain his absence, their parents
