justice system is infinitely more complex, and not all cases will follow these proceedings to the letter. Indeed, many high profile cases may not ever make it to the trial
phase at all. This is because the court system allows for individuals to enter plea arrangements in certain circumstances, in which the right to a trial is foregone, often in
exchange for an admission of guilt and a reduced sentence, or a reduction of charges to a lesser charge. While the plea arrangement system is an excellent way to reduce
the burden of the already overcrowded criminal justice system, it is not always appropriate in every case. The facts of individual cases must be carefully looked at in order to
make a determination about whether or not plea arrangements should be permitted. This paper will explore a recent crime that has not yet been prosecuted in the state of North
Carolina, that of the murder of Mamie Brown on September 15, 2012. On September 15, 2012, police were called to a residential apartment building in North Carolina to check on
the welfare of a tenant at the building whom friends had not heard from in days: 71 year old retiree Mamie Caldwell Brown ("62 Year Old", 2012; "Latest", 2012). When
police arrived, they found that Brown had been the subject of some vicious trauma, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Curious to all involved was the fact that
