years before her death. She was actually elected to the Senate and was the first woman to receive such an honor (Foerstel 50). She was also the first woman to
become chair person of a committee on the Senate (Foerstel 50). Her role in the Senate is therefore of historical importance. In 1996, long after Hattie Caraway made history as
a female Senator with a stint between 1931 and 1945, her portrait would be hung in the Upper Chamber (Foerstel 50). She was a senator from Arkansas during the
early part of the twentieth century and made history on many fronts. Hattie Caraway would begin her journey as a senator in 1931 due to the fact that Governor Parnall
appointed her when her husband-who happened to be senator-died (Foerstel 50). This was not typical at the time, but this is something that has occurred since that time. On one
hand, it seems inappropriate to tell a spouse to take political office, but it has been done in several roles since this time. Of course, for Hattie Caraway, her political
opportunity did not end there. When a special election was held, she did not lose her ability to make changes: she won (Foerstel 50). Although this was an aberration, and
most people did not expect her to run again, she did (Foerstel 50). In 1932, Caraway filed the appropriate forms to quality for reelection (Foerstel 50). While this was all
going on, no one took her seriously, and the frontrunners were Charles Brough and William Kirby (Foerstel 50). IN evaluating the election, it is hard to say why she won.
