form the Australian statistics website and choosing a single page we can analysis this in terms of the various ingredients that make up language, and more specifically written language in
terms of semiotics. The first consideration is that of syntactics. This is the aspect of semiotics that deals with the meaning of symbols, independently of their meaning, here we
are looking at rules of syntax and grammar (Cann, 1993, Eco, 1979). The page we are looking at one this website is the 1996 4128.0 Womens Safety Australia. Looking
at this paper there is effective use of grammar to break up long sentences and create easily digestible chunks without breaking sentences. However, we can also see use of grammar
to create short and sharp sentences. This is a page that is seeking to communicate factual information and as such it may be the use of semantics that is
more appropriate. Semantics is the study of meaning. This looks at how meanings are represented in the mind resulting from the use of the words and the sentence construction.
This is made up of three aspects; the build up of semantic representations, the way these are mapped from the representations to the
