semiotic and narrative analysis of the Red Riding Hood trailer. Semiotics is defined as the "science of signs and/or sign systems" (Gorny). In other words, semiotic understanding of a particular object generally refers to the way in which objects are understood within a particular culture. For example, the public immediately recognizes a representation of a half mask as signifying the Phantom of the Opera; similarly, a dark bat mask is understood to signify Batman. As the Red Riding Hood trailer opens, immediately following the Warner Brothers logo, the audience sees a man and woman walking through snow, with the woman wearing a red cloak, with a hood and a long train. The scene quickly shifts to a wooded scene, with the billowing red cloak trailing after the woman, as the man speaks, explaining that "He cant do this any more," saying also that the womans marriage has been arranged ("Red Riding Hood"). The man and woman are clearly lovers and the woman declares that she would do "anything" to be with him ("Red Riding Hood"). The scene again shifts quickly to a village, with the woman commenting that the wolf has killed again. As yet, the trailer has yet to indicate the name of the film, as this is not necessary, as the filmmakers have portrayed a hooded red cloak and made reference to a wolf. The semiotic meaning is clear as audiences throughout Western society are familiar with the fairy tale of "Little Red Riding Hood." The scene shifts and shows a leader, in period costume, saying that the werewolf has returned to it human form. This segment of the trailer is interspersed with text placards, in white type, set against crimson red smoke, which from a semiotic understanding symbolizes physical danger and mystery.
