with video games, films, trading cards and other toys that was initially thought to have only a potential as a short lived product, but having been on the market for
over a decade the signs are that this could be a long lived product as children grow up with it and the market carries on renewing itself. Childrens toy
markets are often perceived as changing greatly, this is true, the advent of technology along with fashions and trends do see different types of toys come and go,. However, the
actual activity of play and the way that toys satisfy this need remains fairly consistent. The initial barrier of Pok?mon was that of the culture. Historically toys from Japan did
not transfer into the western markets well, the Japanese children appeared to adopt the role playing models more easily than western children. Despite the cultural barriers there had already
been some Japanese toys transfer, such as the Tamagotchi, an electronic pet that children had to look after, feeding and playing with it. This demonstrated that it was possible,
however it was determined that there was a large potential. The games that were developed could be seen as in line with the traditional childrens toy, seen as an extension
of games such as paper, rock and scissors. The first aspect was overcoming the cultural differences. The us of the cartoon had been very successful in Japan, however, when
it was translated it was still out of the correct cultural context, the literal translation did not work. Therefore, to use the cartoons they were re-scripted and the same stories
