It is the story of a daughter who represents the first American-born offspring of her Caribbean immigrant parents, therefore the story of a daughter belonging both to the new
world of her birth and the old world of her heritage. It is, in a sense, the story of the struggle faced by every immigrant who has ever crossed
both ocean and culture in search of the American dream. Brown Girl, Brownstones was first published in 1959, but it wasnt until the 1970s that the book began to be
acclaimed for both its unique use of literary West Indian dialect and its valuable insight into the American immigrant experience. Through Selina Boyce and her interaction with family and
