character of Troy Maxson, in August Wilsons play Fences, is a man who is relatively empty and perhaps desperate. His life is not the life he likely wished it would
be and he seeks satisfaction in many empty pursuits. In the process he is clearly a man who is immersed in selfishness. The following paper examines Troys selfishness in the
play by Wilson. Family Curse in Fences by August Wilson In many ways Troy is a man who has long struggled for everything he has. He has always
felt that he is a man who must fight the white man, the system, and everyone he knows, for his position as right and powerful. He makes a statement, at
one point, that seems to sum up much of what he believes about himself when saying, "I know what Im doing" (Wilson 58). But, in reality he does not know
what he is doing and he only focuses on what he wants from life, trying to control his family to his liking. He is a married man and yet,
in the beginning he tells his buddies "I eye all the women. I dont miss nothing. Dont never let nobody tell you Troy Maxson dont eye the women. (Wilson 10).
This lays a foundation wherein the reader/viewer knows that Troy will do what he wants, even in regards to women although he is married. This later becomes even more evident
