order to look at the ways in which different types of self-presentation are utilised in the course of social interaction, it is useful to consider the way that self-esteem and
self-image are developed, and the relationship between these elements of the individuals self-perception and the way that they interact with others. Scott (2002) makes the point, for example, that people
can be seen as having both private and public aspects to their personality, in the sense of an inner and an outer self, and that in social situations the external
persona will change in response to a number of different factors.
Since the extent to which individuals are prepared to alter their overt behaviour will depend on how strongly they feel about those with whom
they interact, it is generally the case that those whose opinions are valued will elicit a greater degree of positive presentation. Self-image is, therefore, defined not only by the way
in which the individual sees themselves, but also relies on the reactions of other people, and the way that such reactions are interpreted.
Social interaction can only be perceived in
terms of the way that it affects the individuals personal sense of identity, and since this is constantly changing as a result of outside influences, the self can never be
completely defined or considered as something which is innately complete. From this point of view, it could be asserted that self-presentation is something which cannot be seen as static, since
