In addition, we would have to take into account that adolescence itself affects self-concept, because of the various physical and psychological changes which the individual is
undergoing, which are not found in other stages of life. Denney and Martin (2006) comment that "the developmental stage of adolescence is marked by major cognitive, social and biological transitions
from middle childhood" (Denney and Martin 2006) and that the growth of the individuals self-concept forms an integral part of this period of change. They contend that during adolescence there
is a "real" self-concept and a number of "possible" selves which co-exist, and that the individual is aware of the distinction between the public and private self: these different aspects
become integrated as adolescence progresses. They also make the point that there have been a number of
diverse theories which try to account for the development of self-concept: for some, the self is purely a social construct, whereas for others, the "I" represents the individuals ability to
interpret and organize information in a way which leads to the development of a stable idea of "self". They note that Erikson (1968), for instance, sets considerable weight on the
influence of others on the individual: the adolescent is constantly concerned with the way that they appear to other people.
