working in such a climate is that one tends to hold ones self to the same societal standards, often demanding nothing but the best results and outcomes from ones projects. When taken to a certain level, this can be regarded as a healthy state of mind; certainly, there is nothing wrong with having high standards for ones self or in diligently pursuing goals. However, the pervasive spread of stress-related disorders and anxiety in contemporary society suggests that this focus on performance is, at worst, destructive to the mental health of those that adhere to it, and at best, self-defeating in that too intense a focus on results often leads to inferior results as the result of inability to contend with stress. For this reason, it is important to question the coherency of social standards in regard to ones internal self-image and methods of working. For instance, if adopting one standard is conducive only to facilitating stress and anxiety, then it is not a useful standard to adopt. Modern research tends to suggest that positive self-talk, or the practice of communicating internally with the self in a positive, nurturing, and optimistic manner, is essential to facilitating superior health and to improving performance both academically and professionally. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the concept of self-talk in psychology. The concept of self-talk is not exactly new; while its importance has only recently begun to be understood in the realms of industry and education, it has links to psychological tenets that have been well-established for decades.
