quality of life experienced by those individuals who seek out counseling. With the stakes being so high, it is critical for mental health counselors to perform their jobs well, with
a view of the latest therapeutic techniques, and a deep knowledge of when which techniques are most appropriate. This is why training and education is such an integral part of
the preparation that counselors undergo before they ever see their first client. This, however, presents some problems. Individuals working as mental health counselors naturally deal with a lot of sensitive
topics in their practice, especially as they associate with clients who may be suffering from severe mental anguish, stress, or problems stemming from catastrophic personal circumstances. This being the case,
counselors and their clients maintain a bond of confidentiality, which the client relies upon to feel comfortable in sharing vital information with the counselors. Because of this, however, supervisors cannot
often observe counselors in the midst of practice. Some form of observation and measurement is required in order to ensure the continued adherence to best practice throughout the industry. This
is where self-supervision techniques come into play. By making use of self-supervision and associated measurements, counselors are able to monitor their practices for lapses in technique, identify areas of improvement,
and continue to grow as professionals. This paper will present an overview of the field of mental health counseling, the role of self-supervision within that field, and a personalized assessment
of how self-supervision can help me in my own path towards becoming a practicing mental health counselor. This paragraph helps the student provide summary info about the field of
