Self reliance is defined differently by different people. To some individuals self reliance means almost a total independence from others. To other individuals self reliance comes in degrees. The degree of self reliance that can be obtained, however, is almost always determined not just by the skills and resources that are available to an individual but also by the mindset of that individual. These facts are well illustrated by even a brief look at individuals that are remembered as being the staunchest advocates of self reliance. Two of the most notable of such individuals are Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Ralph Waldo Emerson is noted for his philosophies for self reliance and independence, for his preference for the simpler things in life and for his love of nature. This is evidenced as well by his long term friendship and mentorship of the famous Henry David Thoreau who, like Emerson, would become noted for his nature writings and back-to-the land philosophy. Many of Emersons literary works are similar in content to those of Thoreau. Both of these men emphasized the importance of self reliance. Both Emerson and Thoreau are remembered for their philosophies that encapsulated the concepts of self reliance and independence. Both are remembered for their preference for the simpler things in life and for their love of nature. One of Emersons most famous essays, in fact, is titled "Self Reliance".
