work and the growth of self has occupied the minds of many great philosophers. One of these philosophers was Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson is noted for his philosophies for self reliance and independence, for his preference for the simpler things in life and for his love of nature. First published in 1841, his essay entitled "Self Reliance" emphasizes those views. Emerson preferred to avoid the tendency of mankind to look only at the material associations of work, a material association which had been emphasized in mankinds history. Emerson proclaimed that we must abandon the past and that by doing so man has hopes not only of saving himself as an individual but also of saving mankind by encouraging others into one unified front which focuses on beauty, nature, and individualism and not on wealth, power, and the material things of life. Self direction and individualism were critical part of this goal. To Emerson if a man could not trust himself he could trust no one. To distrust ones self was a fatal error. One must also be able to trust the future and to let go of the things which were already history and beyond ones control. This ability was made possible only through true power. To copy the past is to abandon the future according to Emerson. An individual who is intent on replicating things of old is too involved to focus on things which are current or things which could be. On the other hand, however, one who looks to the past for guidance but who then uses his own judgment and self direction to pave a way toward the future is ...
