a period when artists were experimenting with a sort of surrealism as well as still playing with Impressionistic ideals as well. Without seeking any outside sources, sources which would inform
us about the history of the painting, the following paper simply examines the aesthetic encounters from the perspective of this particular reader, and then makes an attempt at art criticism,
relying only on the impressions of this particular writer. Aesthetic Encounters In first glancing or looking at this particular painting it is the contrasting of the black and
the bold colors that truly caught this viewers attention. It is an incredibly bold piece that does not allow for any gentle or subtle viewing. Whatever the painter is trying
to convey, he is trying to convey it with aggressive and powerful methods. One of the most powerful emotional elements of this boldness comes to this viewer through the
predominant color, orange. The mans shirt is filled with orange and black stripes and then the artist has also provided a very strong geometrical border on the right of the
painting that is an orange vertical edge, almost a partial border. The stripes of the shirt are horizontal while the orange stripe on the right of the painting is vertical.
This offers a very powerful statement that can be seen as quite emotional and strong. When we think of the color orange we are not necessarily given image of
anger and passion, although orange is closely related to red which is a color that evokes feelings of passion and anger. Because it is related to red, however, we are
given the most subtle feelings of these emotions. For this particular viewer the orange evokes almost a confused, yet also more stable and intellectual, experience with anger and passion.
