results for women, who may eventually become unable to see themselves as having value outside of a sexualized context. The article "That Swimsuit Becomes You" by Barbara L. Fredrickson explores
the concept of sexual objectification and how it impacts the lives of women through conducting a variety of basic experiments and reporting the outcome. The article relies heavily upon
the basis of objectification theory. Objectification theory holds to the idea that as sexualized messages are transmitted through culture, they have the tendency to reduce an individuals identity to purely
sexualized aspects. It is a transformation that "occurs whenever peoples bodies, body parts, or sexual functions are separated out from their identity, reduced to the status of mere instruments" (Fredrickson
et al., 1998). For instance, if some individuals openly discussed the "value" or "quality" of a womans breasts without any concession to the actual identity of the woman, but instead
treating her (more specifically, just her breasts) as an object existing purely for sexual gratification, the woman is undergoing the process of objectification. One of the most important parts of
objectification theory, however, is that as cultural expectations become increasingly objectifying, people may engage in self-objectification simply "as an adaptive strategy" to meet the expectations of their peers (Fredrickson et
al., 1998). For instance, if a woman knows she will be judged on her sexual appeal at a job interview, she may engage in self-objectifying behavior, consciously dressing and behaving
in such a way as to emphasize the sexual aspects of her personality artificially. Over time, this act of self-objectification can have dire consequences for individuals. These include the reality
that "manipulated self-consciousness or public attention... can reliably induce restrained eating in women", suggesting that self-objectification is a major precursor to the development of eating disorders (Fredrickson et al., 1998).
