is a link between it and academic performance. Definitions Defining self-esteem is not as easy as we might think, because its much more than simply "feeling good about ourselves."
A good definition might be that self-esteem is "The experience of being capable of meeting lifes challenges and being worthy of happiness" (Reasoner, 2004). People with healthy self-esteem
are tolerant and respectful of others; they "accept responsibility for their actions, have integrity ... [and] take pride in their accomplishments" (Reasoner, 2004). They are also "self-motivated, willing to
take risks, capable of handling criticism, loving and lovable, seek the challenge and stimulation of worthwhile and demanding goals, and take command and control of their lives" (Reasoner, 2004).
They trust they are living lives of authenticity in which they are the main actors, and they further trust that their own being (existence) is "life affirming, constructive, responsible and
trustworthy" (Reasoner, 2004). The confusion about what self-esteem is comes from the fact that people with high self-esteem are confident and accomplished, commanding and in control, and this can appear
to be arrogance or conceit (Reasoner, 2004). But these and other "undesirable" characteristics, such as egotism and a sense of superiority, are actually found in people with low self-esteem.
People who have low self-esteem often try to "prove themselves" in order to impress others (Reasoner, 2004). They may "use others for their own gain," or act
arrogantly and contemptuously toward them (Reasoner, 2004). They generally doubt their own abilities, worth and acceptability, and are thus reluctant to take risks or put themselves in situations in
which they might fail (Reasoner, 2004). (Obviously if you dont take risks youll never get anywhere, and successful people fail a lot before they succeed.) People with low
