Still, through the many phases of development-childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, old age-there are different things that come to the forefront. New ideas surface as do new realizations. An individual begins to lose his or her shell, or the ego, and find that they are part of a larger human pool of individuals. A recent television reality show saw a brother and sister married. Why? They did not know they were related. It was only after the discovery of an affair that they found out they had the same father. It was after many years that the truth became known. While a very unusual story, this is not an unusual theme and in fact found in the well known fictitious tale, Oedipus Rex. In this tragic story, Oedipus unknowingly marries his own biological mother. It todays world, it is not uncommon for confusion to reign as far as biology is concerned. A parent may not be known to a child as they may have given that child up for adoption, donated sperm or egg, acted only as a surrogate parent, have been artificially inseminated, and so forth. Technology has had a way of impinging on morality, and today, there is a sense that part of the process of self-discovery is finding out ones origin. Where someone comes from biologically and geographically has meaning in the process of discovering the self. While higher level processes that go to ideation about philosophy and so forth enters the picture, and renders the physical body almost irrelevant, there is on another level an importance attached to DNA and personal history.
