law. The Five Dimensions of Graduate Study The student could open with a statement such as this one: I have used the accepted
five dimensions of graduate study - originality, leadership, independence, critical thinking and scholarship - to guide my approach to assimilating course content and particularly to that related to beginning my
review of literature. My reading of the professional literature has led me to begin formulating research questions to pursue in the research phase of my graduate work, primarily in
terms of what I have noticed in the literature that others have not pursued. This serves the originality dimension of graduate study, as does my activity in searching online
databases of theses and dissertations related to my proposed topic, for the purpose of ensuring that my topic is indeed original and has not been addressed by other graduate students.
Similarly, the student can add a leadership statement worded along the lines of: I am aware of the difficulties of putting research into
practice, and I also am aware of many of the shortcomings of current special education research. I strive to promote concepts arising from valid, reliable research, encouraging assimilation of
