their talent. Artists of the baroque period tended toward finding meaning in religious representation. In art, style, form, iconography, color, and light form the essence of criticism and
mark the difference between a masterful work and the common. The impact on the audience is the final judge of a paintings worth. Rest on the Flight into
Egypt by Orazio Gentileschi, The Four Evangelists by Jacob Jordaens and The Crucifixion Of St. Peter by Luca Giordano are done in the naturalist style of the baroque period and
share the theme of religious representation. The artists have their own personal styles, however, each has conformed to the baroque style in their use of space, time and, especially,
the use of light and dark for dramatic effect. The Baroque period fell toward the end of what has come to be known as the High Renaissance.
The style itself is seen as different from Renaissance style in that it is more dynamic, less static, than the work of preceding painters. There are some scholars who
believe that the two styles are completely divergent, perhaps even in opposition as a result of the difference in emotional perception. If there were words that could aptly
describe the art from the baroque period they would include: spacious, dynamic, natural, colorful, passionate, sensual and versatile. It was a time when the world was open to
new ideas but was still very much focused on the Christian teachings and ideals (at least in Europe). All of these paintings were done in the early 1600s and
