occur within them. In the past the security needs of an upscale downtown hotel could be expected to greatly differ from those of a large shopping mall in the
suburbs. While that may still be true depending on the nature of the surrounding area, all public places have needed increased security in the wake of the terrorist attacks
of September 11, 2001. As public budgets come under increasing pressures, owners and managers of businesses increasingly find it necessary to employ private security personnel.
Private security forces can exist as an individual who continually drives through the Wal-Mart parking lot after dark to a full-scale police-like unit complete with paramilitary designations,
hierarchy and armed operation. The needs of the Great Healthcare Medical Center fall between these two extremes. It is the goal of Great Healthcare Medical Center to provide
security services that are fully adequate but do not move into the realm of unnecessary action or preparation. Training Focus Security forces at
Great Healthcare Medical Center will be trained in all aspects of every security need of the hospital. This will focus on physical security but will include other health-specific security
requirements such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA, Title II). The regulations of HIPAA provide a great deal of latitude for health care providers
