important it is for companies to protect their sites as the twenty-first century emerges. Further, another aspect of the problem is that while security breaches are serious, society has yet
to truly embrace it as a real dilemma. Sabotage activity is looked upon as fun. Hackers often impede business simply to see if they can. It is the challenge that
motivates them. Thus, people are more accepting of such activity because they look upon the hackers, who are usually young and bright, as being clever. Yet, hackers are engaging in
serious crimes. While protection is obviously necessary, what is perhaps not so obvious is that vulnerabilities are found in the offices of industry giants. No company is immune, not even
Microsoft. The Microsoft Corporation has in fact had several problems. In 2001, it revealed in a bulletin two distinct vulnerabilities. This bulletin included information on two security problems with
Windows Media Player ("Microsoft Security," 2003). While the problems are not really related, except that they are related to the same software, a single patch was created by Microsoft to
address both problems (2003). One vulnerability, as described by the bulletin, explains that the "attacker could either send an affected file to another user and entice him to
run or preview it, or she could host such a file on a web site and cause it to launch automatically whenever a user visited the site." The other vulnerability
had to do with Internet shortcuts as Media PLayer has a flaw that causes it to save Internet shortcuts to a users temporary file folder (2003). This turns out
