II. THE NEED FOR PROTECTIVE MEASURES From keyless door locks to room safes, deadbolts to surveillance cameras and roving security guards to limited access points into and out of the property after dark, the hospitality industry has taken the approach to guest safety very seriously, especially since the terrorist activity of September 11, 2001, an event that literally changed the manner by which hospitality perceived and addressed any type of potential guest threat. Indeed, the need for guest safety existed long before 911, however, the urgency escalated within a matter of hours to something that had to fall between the polar opposites of "ensuring safety and security and preserving peoples right to privacy and civil liberties."1 However, the sentiment post-911 was that of less attention being paid to privacy and significantly more to protection. "Some privacy concerns went out the window after September 11. But, this is something the public seems to want...Travelers not only do not mind being inconvenienced about heightened security, they are outraged if they are not."2 III.
