public affairs (Google.com, 2008). There is a very good reason that the concept and premises of secularism have become so prominent in reiglious, political and social discussions. That reason
is the fact that the world is far more aware of the religious government that exist in the world. The control of a nation by a church is foreign to
Westerners and goes against the principles that define democracy. This awareness was certainly fueled by the September 11, 2001 attacks on America by Muslim Jihads. This discussion was also fueled
by different political events in the world, including Hamas realized a decisive victory in the elections in Palestine in January 2006 (Shah and Toft, 2006). These authors point out
that global politics are "increasingly marked by what could be called prophetic politics" (Shah and Toft, 2006, p. 38). Prophetic politics are those that defined that election in Palestine where
the victor is considered to be a Muslim prophet (Shah and Toft, 2006). Other events along the same line include the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan, the revolution in
Iran in 1979 and even the struggle against Apartheid in the 1980s when evangelical Christians played a strong role. (Shah and Toft, 2006). Globalization and the increased freedom in the
world has, in fact, led to greater, not lesser, influence of religious leaders (Shah and Toft, 2006). The authors trace this over the last three or four decades (Shah and
Toft, 2006). This greater influence of religion defies the secularism on which most democratic, but not all, governments rely. It has a very definite impact on foreign relations as well
