for learning within the educational process. One of the most important aspects of this is recognizing that learners have varied learning styles and that this can impact how each
individual receives, integrates and applies what he/she has learned. Felder argues that the fundamental differences between students in terms of their response to the way information is presented and
their capacity for analysis and application can result in very different educational experiences in a population of learners. It is the responsibility of educators, then, within the scope of
secondary school content areas, to address the needs of varied learners and varied learning styles in order to ensure that each student has access to the content in a manner
that is learnable. Many educators maintain, though, that they teach the way they teach and that students must adapt their learning style to the educators
styles. The argument behind this belief is that in classrooms with large populations of students, it may be impossible to reach each student in an authentic manner. Teaching
in a single style is believed by some to reach the most learners, even if some fall through the cracks. Theorists like Richard Felder argue that educators should
utilize a variety of teaching techniques, not only to reach students with a variety of learning styles, but also to keep materials fresh and reduce the potential for boredom.
In fact, Felder argues that if there is a disconnect between the style of teaching utilized by the teacher and the learning style of the largest segment of the learner
population, the classroom can become unmanageable. The end product of this kind of disconnect can result in low test scores, unresponsive learners, demonstrable boredom and poor attendance (Felder).
