Law Reports (A.L.R.) is a set of books published by the West Company, which is now a subsidiary of Thompson, a mammoth organization that provides information through many different means
including books and databases. Each of the articles that is published in the A.L.R. is "a complete research brief that summarizes all case law relevant to a specific legal point"
(American Law Reports, 6th (ALR(r) Series), 2006). The articles objectively analyze the cases in their entirety and present "both sides of an issue" (American Law Reports, 6th (ALR(r) Series), 2006).
The books cite all the cases by jurisdiction to make it easy for users to find those that are applicable to their local authority; they are cross-referenced to another resource
the "West Key Number System(r)"; as well as providing a table of "cited statutes and cases" (American Law Reports, 6th (ALR(r) Series), 2006). The articles also show "which cases are
controlling or on point and why" (American Law Reports, 6th (ALR(r) Series), 2006). Finally, the series of books is 20 volumes long at this point and is constantly updated. The
entire set has a purchase price of $1,770, but volumes can be bought individually. Most attorneys keep this set, or one like it, in their office as their primary resource.
It would be particularly useful for two reasons: first, it analyzes specific legal issues, and second, it shows which cases are controlling. These books are probably most useful when researching
