and the so-called "second wave feminism" that most people have become aware of the womens movement. This paper discusses second wave feminism and some of the works that speak
to the issues involved in it. Discussion What is second-wave feminism? Like all "movements" its difficult to define exactly when second-wave feminism started, but the term generally refers
to the period of feminist thought that began around the 1960s, and "was mainly concerned with independence and greater political action to improve womens rights" (Second wave feminism). ("First
wave feminism" can be generally thought of as the beginnings of the movement and the fight for such "absolute" rights as suffrage.) Second wave feminism built on the foundation already
laid by the earlier womens struggle, and concerned itself with such things as "economic equality between the genders and addressing the rights of female minorities" (Second wave feminism.)
One of the main differences between second wave feminism and the earlier movements was the inclusion of lesbians in the faction (Second wave feminism). The reasoning here is very
interesting: straight women activists felt that lesbian women were too "mannish" while lesbians felt that any women involved in a heterosexual relationship was automatically in a subordinate position simply
by reason of the existence of the relationship (Second wave feminism). (Im not certain what the feminists objection to "mannish" women is based on, unless its a fear that
lesbians who have such an appearance will be classified as "dykes" and not taken seriously, thus calling the legitimacy of the entire womens movement into question. There may be
