it appears that this man is in fact a bartender. A photograph of a hand is shown relaxed with a cigarette between the expected fingers. The cigarette is lit and
has not even been toked very much at all. The cigarette is almost the size of a freshly lit one as it has a long bit of ash at the
end. The smoke which comes from the end of this lit cigarette covers much of the face of the bartender who sports a slight grin, and looks forward into the
camera. The point here is that it is impossible to allow smoking in a bar without someone getting hurt. The bartender obviously has to endure smoke being blown into his
face over and over again. Many consider smoking a choice, but the picture makes it appear as if this worker has no choice. The rhetoric accompanying the photograph
is not surprising. The article begins as follows: " Separate smoking sections dont cut it: Only smoke-free buildings and public places truly protect nonsmokers from the hazards of breathing in
other peoples tobacco smoke, says a long-awaited surgeon generals report" (Neergaard, 2006). The picture goes along nicely with the statement. After all, the photograph proves that nonsmokers will obviously breath
in smoke if they are not afforded separate facilities. A student writing on this subject suggests that this picture is symbolic of visual rhetoric and is a part of the
global issue of secondhand smoke. Second hand smoke in fact is a heated issue. There are people who believe that the smoke they breath in through cigarette smoke that goes
into the air will harm them. Some take it so far as to ban cigarette smoking in outdoor parks for example, but usually, the attention is to the litter that
