young children are very interested in conserving energy and in learning about the ecological systems found on earth. Children at this age love learning about things that are different, which
is why the rain forest is chosen as the general theme for this unit. The rain forest is filled with plants and creatures children do not see every day. Most
often when they learn of the dangers that are posed to these creatures, they want to do what they can to help. Developmentally, this age child is compassionate and
believes in the impossible. They have reached the age when they know pretend from reality and they have also reached the age of realizing they themselves can make a difference.
As for using an interdisciplinary approach, we can refer to Dewey and others who said that we do not live in a world that is segregated into math, writing,
reading, science, etc. No, we live in a world where all the disciplines are mixed up and we must call upon several in any given situation. Using interdisciplinary units has
consistently been found to lead children to a far greater and more comprehensive understanding of the general theme of the lesson. Objectives Related to Pennsylvania Standards * Know at
