are seemingly lost in some ways and are searching for meaning. This is especially applicable to Franny. The following paper examines the theme of searching, in relationship to meaning and
depth, as it involves the character of Franny. Searching in Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger In Salingers novel Franny is, in the beginning of the book, incredibly stressed
and lost in a world that seems superficial and meaningless. She tells her boyfriend, whom she thinks is perhaps idiotic and meaningless as well, "Im just sick of ego, ego,
ego. My own and everybody elses" (Salinger 29). She is a young woman lost in her life and confused about what she believes and essentially where to go and what
to do with her life. The first half of the book deals with her and her sense of confusion as she heads towards a breakdown. In the second section
of the novel she has returned home and seemingly cries incessantly about life and what to do. In this section, titled Zooey, her brother Zooey attempts to help her figure
out what life could mean to her. He encourages her to think more seriously about acting, which she said she was going to give up on. She feels that such
a pursuit is meaningless, just like she thinks everything is meaningless. Obviously she is in a deep depression and cannot seem to find a way out. At the same time
she is also a woman who feels she is perhaps intellectually superior to those around her, which is something her brother feels as well. This puts her deeper into a
