search engine to find what they are looking for (Mead, 2003). It has also been shown that for results to make a real impact they need to be within the
first thirty results retuned by the search engine, only 30% of searchers will even look beyond the first ten results (Mead, 2003). The key to success if to create web
pages that are interpreted as relevant by the search engines and are listed in that top thirty. There is not easy way to ensure any page hits the top ten
results. The use of keywords is very important. To look at how web pages content should be created to gain search engine optimisation we first need to know, briefly,
how web search engines work and decide which pages should be placed in which positions when results are returned. There are two main search engine frameworks, crawler based engines and
human powered directories. Crawler based engines, such as google, will crawl the web automatically, searching the web pages with predetermined algorithms, identifying the relevant terms on the web page.
There are also human powered directories, for example, the Open Directory. These are more labour intensive to run as web masters submit a description of their web site to the
search engine administrators to review. Alternatively, the search engine administrators may write the discretion. The pages will then be ranked according to the description, not the content. In todays complex
