media. It is unfair of movie audiences to expect a director to put their favorite book on screen, scene-for-scene. For one thing, any film that included every detail in the
book on which it is based would probably be several days long. No one is going to sit through that. Even more importantly, however, the two art forms do different
things, and should be allowed to use those strengths. This paper compares the novel Seabiscuit to its film version and argues that people going to see films of their favorite
novel should be prepared to accept it for what it is: a film based on a book, not a recreation of it. Discussion Books and films each have strengths and
weaknesses. A novelist has the time to develop a theme, explore characters psychological backgrounds, and perhaps plant clues that allow a reader to solve a mystery, or at least
understand a situation. He can take as long as he likes to present his material: Lord of the Rings is a great example. The real heart of the story is
Frodos decision to carry the Ring to Mt. Doom and destroy it; everything else-all the other characters, the various languages and races, the battles, all are in support of the
one main idea. But while it might have been possible to tell the story without all the additions - Frodo and Sam could have hiked straight to Mordor with Aragorn
