way for real suffering at times, when family members fall victim to anothers rage or misery. We are familiar with the fact that many women are battered by their husbands,
and children by their parents, but what is not often remembered is that elderly people are also be abused-by caregivers, friends, and relatives. This paper looks at what elder
abuse is, and the limitations of screening for it. Elder Abuse "Elder abuse" is a catch-all term to describe all sorts of problems, including emotional, sexual and physical
abuse; financial exploitation; and neglect (Levey, 2003). Under neglect, we find such things as refusing to provide adequate shelter and food, withholding medicine, or failing to take the older
person to doctors appointments (Levey, 2003). Physical abuse will leave obvious trauma (bruises, cuts, etc.) but emotional and psychological abuse may not be apparent to the outside observer, but
will leave the victim humiliated, intimidated and fearful (Levey, 2003). Like all other forms of abuse, elder abuse occurs in all kinds of families (Levey, 2003). Leveys point is
well taken, because there is still an attitude in society in general that abuse only occurs among "those" people; i.e., the poor, minorities, single-parent families; whatever is not the so-called
"norm." . The truth is that abuse occurs everywhere, at every socio-economic level, and that its not limited to a few isolated instances. One of the problems with
