cause. Sometimes the cause is physical or physiological and other times the reason is psychological. Concerned parents may want to have children who show signs of delay undergo psychological tests.
Further, teachers in nursery schools and daycare providers who work with very young children, will also want to be cognizant of any possible development problems and bring them to the
attention to parents and counselors. Such tests are numerous. In looking at screening and cognitive tools that are utilized for children ages two through five , there are many
to choose from, each addressing different behavioral aspects or particular living arrangement. For example, some psychologists believe that orphaned children are more at risk than average. One study noted that
nurses who worked with young children should have a high index of suspicion for developmental and necrologic problems if children are in foster care (OHara, Church & Blatt, 1998). While
it is true that children in foster care may need more assessment than children who have grown up in an intact family, for example, screening is also often required in
other types of homes and environments. It is prudent for an examiner to make decisions on whether or not to proceed with a test based on both a childs environment
and any suspicions or behavioral problems that might be observed. OHara, Church and Blatt (1998) have suggested that children in foster care should be screened with the DDST-II, ELM
