say about war, and if his observations are relevant today. Discussion Many people are fascinated by Hannibal and his campaign against Rome. They remember his courage and his daring, innovative
thinking in using elephants to get his army across the Alps to attack Rome. Somewhere along the line, they forget that he didnt actually succeed in his invasion; they also
forget that the man who beat Hannibal is Scipio Africanus. But Hannibal has lived on in the public imagination while Scipio has not. This is the introduction Liddell Liddell Hart
provides to his subject, and then explains why this is so: "The flash of the meteor impresses the human imagination more than the remoter splendour [sic] of the star, fixed
immutably in the high heavens" (Liddell Hart, 2004, p. 1). He suggests that this is why we remember Lee, not Grant; and Napoleon, not Wellington (Liddell Hart, 2004). Further, he
argues, it is not modern journalism that has made heroes out of those men who can be seen as "lost causes," romantic and doomed-it goes all the way back to
Hannibals attack on Rome. In using this example to introduce his book, Liddell Hart brings up an important point: those who go to war looking for glory are likely
to be disappointed. He also humanizes Scipio for his readers, since this is a man who accomplished great things and is still not widely known. Scipios first introduction to
war was at the age of 17, when he accompanied his father into battle; it was against Hannibal at Ticinus, on Italian soil, after Hannibal crossed the Alps (Liddell Hart,
