the virus causing specific diseases have been determined, and why modern homes are full of innumerable gadgets from electric lights to the microwave, which are all products of scientific investigation. The following discussion of the scientific method describes a simple experiment, which demonstrates how a hypothesis can be proven. There are six basic steps to the scientific method, which are: "Ask a question; Do background research; Construction a hypothesis; Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment; analyze your data and draw a conclusions; (and) communicate your results" ("Steps," 2010). The question for the proposed experiment is: Does the position of the sun relative to the plant influence the direction in which it grows? Background research reveals that plants need sunlight (or an electric light that emits the same range of ultraviolet emissions) in order to make chlorophyll, which is essential for plant growth ("Do plants," 2010). In order to answer the research question, the hypothesis is formed that, due to a plants need for sunlight, it will grow towards the strongest available light source. To test this hypothesis, an experiment was conducted. A few black beans were placed on a wet piece of cotton inside two cups. One cup was placed on a window ledge beside a sunny window and the other cup was placed outside that it received direct sunlight. In both cases, the plants grew straight up until they reached the brim of the cup, after which, the beans in the cup on the window ledge grew with a slight bend that was inclined toward the window. The outside plants continued to grow straight up. As this indicates, analysis of this result supports the hypothesis as being true. As this principle is well accepted as being true, there is no need to publish the ...
