the children are learning science--which many deem difficult and out of the realm of ordinary experience--and they are learning English at the same time. Science contains a specialized language, and
this is not easy for any student to master (Case, 2002). One can imagine that it is much more difficult for a student learning both new English terminology coupled with
basic English. Of course, many students do meet the challenge, and not only that, but when teaching science to children who are already fluent in English, teaching science to elementary
school students can be daunting anyway. Examples of how advanced scientific material needs to be reconstructed is important. First, by choosing a few areas or pieces of information, one can
see how a teacher can apply the material to come from Wades (1997) book entitled The Science Times Book of Fish. For instance, when implementing activities in an elementary
school setting, one may want to focus on the diversity of fishes and its habitat span on Earth. Wade reports that the abalone of California is one fish that may
become extinct (1997). This bit of information should be relayed to the students and the word "extinct" should be defined and reiterated. How might a teacher convey the idea to
a class of elementary school children? He or she would come to the definition by providing analogies and asking questions. For example, the teacher might ask "Has anyone here
ever lost a pet?" There may be a few hands raised and after a short discussion on the death of a pet--which could conceivably be sad--the teacher should swiftly ask
whether or not all dogs, or cats or turtles are dead. The answer will be a "no" as students will point out that they have seen other pets, and they
