US politicians who are associated with American involvement in Southeast Asia, that is, Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson, are, in general, denigrated both by the public and by historical scholarship. In Lyndon Johnson and Europe, In the Shadow of Vietnam (2003), historian Thomas Alan Schwartz offers a reasoned and scholarly reassessment of LBJ's foreign policy with a particular focus on Europe. As his title implies, Schwartz is principally concerned with demonstrating that Johnson's foreign policy was not exclusively shaped by the US involvement in Vietnam. Rather than being dominated by Vietnam, Schwartz offers a reassessment of the Johnson Administration that argues that foreign policy during this era encompassed many levels, with European relations taking a central and focused significance. than being dominated by Vietnam, Schwartz offers a reassessment of the Johnson Administration that argues that foreign policy during this era encompassed many levels, with European relations taking a central
and focused significance. Therefore, due to this position, Schwartz focuses on Johnsons policies in regards to Western Europe, especially Germany, France and Great Britain. In so doing, he seeks
to offer rebuttal to the academic perspective that LBJ failed to achieve process on the key European issues of the day. It is Schwartzs stance that historys focus on Vietnam,
as well as Johnsons predilection for focusing on domestic policy, overshadowed what can be described as his very real successes in European foreign policy. Schwartzs portrait of Johnson as
a consummate politician and man of reason contrasts against innumerable less favorable descriptions. For example, Robert Caro paints Johnson as a "power-hungry opportunist" (Schwartz 2003, p. 224). These portraits emphasize
the Vietnam debacle, and, consequently overlook Johnsons achievements in Europe, which Schwartz feels "deserve consideration as one of the most important achievements of his presidency" (Schwartz 2003, p. 225). In
his text, Schwartz shows how Johnson built on the initiatives fashioned by John Kennedy, which were aimed at reducing the chilling perspective of all-out nuclear war. With its wealth and
