both external and internal, that define how individuals actions are perceived. Psychoanalytic Sigmund Freud is often viewed as the central figure in the psychoanalytic view of personality. Freud
argued that the subconscious mind plays a major role in determining the way a person acts or reacts. Behavioral styles, then, are defined by the influences on the subconscious,
based on formative experiences. The Freudian school of thought, then, is based on the perceived need for individuals to be introspective in order to address their responses to external
stimuli. Personality is shaped by the anxiety-related responses to formative experiences that are contained within the subconscious mind (Freud, 1995). Principles The central principle of the
psychoanalytic school of thought is that the personality is comprised of three parts, the Id, the Ego and the Superego. The Id is the genetic piece of the personality,
those animalistic traits that are passed on through biology. The Ego is the element that reigns in the force of the primitive Id and is individually driven. The
Superego is defined by the conscience, which is experientially shaped by negative repercussions for negative behaviors, and the Ego-Ideal, which is experientially shaped by positive praise for positive behaviors.
Freud, then, believed that there are substantial elements of the personality that are shaped by genetics and substantial elements that are shaped by early childhood experience. Timeframe The psychoanalytic
