There are numerous examples in educational research literature that indicate that through community involvement, numerous positive learning goals can be reached. There are numerous examples in educational research literature that indicate that through community involvement, numerous positive learning goals can be reached. Epstein and Sheldon (2002) conducted a longitudinal study that investigated the relationship between daily rates of school attendance and the existence of family-school-community partnerships. This research revealed that the establishment of family-school-community partnership has a direct and positive effect on school attendance, as well as a decrease in chronic absenteeism (Epstein and Sheldon, 2002). This research has important implications for academic achievement, as students cannot learn curriculum material if absenteeism is a problem. Sanders and Lewis (2005) formulated case studies on three high schools, which have implemented exemplary community partnerships. These researchers found that successful programs generally fell into one of three interrelated categories, which are "(1) improving student academic and personal success; (2) enhancing school quality; and (3) supporting community development" (Sanders and Lewis, 2005, p. 1). The high schools profiled in this study formulated an variety of community partnership activities that expressed a diverse span of motivations for partnership development (Sanders and Lewis, 2005). Leaders from these case study schools, in regards to implementing a successful community partnership program emphasized that it takes time and planning to make such an effort successful. Partners in the community included "large and small businesses, cultural institutions, hospitals and other health care facilities, volunteer organizations, colleges and other educational institutions and government agencies" (Sanders and Lewis, 2005, p. 1).
