Indeed, the effectiveness of a police presence in schools cannot be ignored, but having a police presence in the school makes it feel more like a police state. That
is not the America that most people want. Although people are willing to give up a bit of freedom for safety, the community police officer assigned to the school appears
to be just too inflammatory to be sanctioned as a positive option. In some way, police presence is comforting, but it probably does more harm than good. In researching this
topic, several questions crop up. When discussing violence in the school, it pays to look at the level of violence. What types of violent event are occurring at schools? How
is violence defined? Who are the stakeholders and how do they define violence? For example, Board members may define violence quite differently than might a student or a teacher. Also,
in examining this topic, student profiling is a serious question. Many people object to doing so, but in the case of Columbine, some wish that profiling had been initiated. Finally,
who is affected by the violence? What are factors that have been tied to the rise of violence in schools? Through researching this topic, a student will find a slew
of information on the subject, thus providing information related to many of the questions posed above. An article by Brendtro for example relays an incident that occurred about half a
century ago where a child set a school on fire, killing three teachers and 92 students (73). This case is dubbed the worst case of school violence in U.S. history
