students being caught with weapons on school grounds simply did not happen in years past. Many factors are undoubtedly at play in this development. One of the
more influential, however, has to involve the degree to which todays youth is being inoculated with the concept of violence. The most guilty player in that inoculation can be
found right in our living rooms. That player is the family television! Incidences of violence in our nations schools have reached epidemic
proportions. Everything from radical incidents of violence between individuals and groups to school shootings and reports of bombs has appeared in recent headlines. School violence is now a
very real, and a very tragic, element of American life, an element which can only be changed through a regearing of society itself. That regearing, however, must be based
on an understanding of exactly what it is that is causing this escalation in violence (Engler, 2001). That regearing must recognize the role the media plays in this relationship.
Television has become progressively more willing to present more and more graphic detail in regard to violent acts in the news and other
programming content. Television is not alone in this respect, however. Newspapers and even radio have become identified more with the depiction of violence than it has practically any
other topic. The tendency of television toward a greater and greater concentration on violent programming, however, is particularly alarming given the number of children who view television verses the
other media. Graphically violent television and movies have unfortunately become the norm in the industry. Their allure to young children, although incontestable, is one of the prominent societal
