school violence. Literature Review : According to Skiba and Peterson (1999), many schools across the nation, have established the technique of zero tolerance in order
to deal with discipline problems. The 1997-98 school year brought a great deal of school violence (372). Because of this, a large number of schools have established "zero
tolerance discipline policies," although not a great deal of research has been done on whether this type of technique is effective (372). There are alternatives to harsh punishment.
These include identifying troubled children early on, taking actions that will prevent violence, and responding to the childs disorderly behavior in a manner that is consistent in its approach, and
that deals with the child as an individual (Skiba & Peterson, 1999). A poll was taken by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and
a report; "Violence and Discipline Problems in U. S. Public Schools" was generated from the national poll. More than twelve hundred principals of elementary, middle and high schools formed
this sampling (372). Surprisingly, at the top of the list of infractions the principals considered either serious or moderate problems was tardiness, coming in at 40% (372). The
