better academic scores and then people who argue that uniforms do nothing but force children to outwardly conform. The following paper presents the pros and cons of this argument and
then goes on to argue that school uniforms are not the answer to improving discipline and motivation in Americas schools. School Uniforms: Pros and Cons It is perhaps
interesting, and informative, to note that uniforms were actually introduced, at first, to demonstrate social status, and not equality: "Private schools first imported the British tradition of student uniforms to
mark a students social status" (Spence, 2007). Then many public schools began to introduce them in the latter part of the 1980s in order to relieve the sense of pressure
in existence as it related to fashion statements and problems arising with some statements (Spence, 2009). This is one of the most important reasons why people want uniforms in schools
today as it relates to fashion statements concerning gang attire. It is believed that if all the students are dressing the same then there will be no problems with
gang violence which is associated strongly with the attire students put on. But, there are also problems simply associated with fashion and what is considered hip. The following illustrates aspects
of the fashion argument in favor of uniforms: "Schools report that school uniforms decrease fighting and violence that arise out of arguments over fashionable clothes. Children invariably tease those who
do not have trendy clothes. Those who cant afford name brand clothes are often sensitive about their clothing. Schools struggling with gang problems report that school uniforms help ease tensions"
